Sentence Structure Overview
In English grammar, a sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It typically includes a subject (the person, thing, or idea that the sentence is about) and a predicate (the part of the sentence that contains the verb and describes the action or state of the subject).
A sentence can be simple or complex, depending on the number of clauses it contains. A simple sentence consists of one independent clause, while a complex sentence contains at least one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
Additionally, a sentence can be categorized according to its purpose or function. For example, a declarative sentence makes a statement, an interrogative sentence asks a question, an imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request, and an exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotion or emphasis.
